Year 1872, location 38 miles southwest of Roanoke in Montgomery county, Blacksburg town, Virginia, a new door was opened for enriched learning with the foundation of Virginia Polytechnic Institution and State University .It was built with the vision of betterment of the commonwealth of Virginia locally and at the same time with broader prospects for nation and world community at large. With the founding name of Virginia Agriculture and Mechanical college, it has been operating under four legal official names in due course of its history.

Officially nicknamed as Virginia tech, it’s a comprehensive Land grant public university and a leading research institution fulfilling the mission of acquisition of new knowledge and its dissemination. Virginia tech always believed in its approach towards discovery and attainment through enduring on and off campus learning through learning facilities, engaged education, world class faculty, research collaborations, dynamic programs and progressive community role.

With 2,600 acres main campus, approx. 135campus building and 1,422 full time faculty, Virginia tech is not just providing education it is in fact building a future with better social, behavioral and economical solutions for society as a whole. With mission to serve, Virginia tech offers 225 undergraduate and graduate degree programs in different fields. It has seven undergraduate academic colleges which are Agriculture and Life Sciences, Architecture and Urban Studies, Engineering, Liberal Arts and Human services, Natural Resources an Environment, Science, and Pamplin College of Bussiness, through which it offers 65 bachelor degree programs.

Whereas there are 160 master’s and doctoral degrees being offered through graduate school and professional degree through Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine. Along with that there are off campus education facilities being made available in six regions and a study abroad site in Switzerland. The total on and off campus enrollment is 31,205.

Research constitutes a major part of the university activities. Different fields are being explored with students and faculty side by side like agriculture, human health, biotechnology, information and communication technology, energy management, security, sustainability and many more. It holds the honour of leading research in fields like fuel cell technology and power electronics. To facilitate agricultural research a 1,800 acres research farm is present adjacent to the campus. Also present adjacent to campus is Virginia Tech Research Centre, established on 230 acres to help entrepreneurs to grow.

Students at Virginia Tech, nicknamed hokies believe in delivering and showing their capabilities in different arrays and fields. First life size robot, self-sustaining solar house and bridge for Haiti children are just a few such imprints left. In recognition to its efforts it has been rewarded by Princeton review 2014 list amongst 150 best value colleges, whereas National Sciences Foundation ranked it 1st amongst research universities in Virginia. It is ranked 27th in Kiplinger’s Personal Finance 2014 list of bests values in public education.

Along with education, recreational activities are also facilitated and organized at campus and also at country level to compete with different colleges. Sports and arts are integral parts of Virginia tech. There are around ten men’s varsity NCCA Division I-A sports like basketball, baseball, soccer, golf, tennis, wrestling etc., whereas at the same time around nine women varsity sports like basketball, tennis, swimming and diving and cross country just to name a few. The mascot of university is HokieBird and official colours are burnt orange and Chicago maroon. With a belief of touching lives with value oriented solutions, Virginia tech will carry on its efforts for betterment of the society as a whole.
