Starting its journey in 1787 from a log cabin as Pittsburgh academy, who knew that it will be the home to achievers who will play there role and will be a part of changing history like polio vaccine and insulin synthesis.

Founded by Hugh Henry Brackenridge, it is one of the few universities established in 18th century. Surviving two devastating fires and relocations, it evolved to western university of Pennsylvania in 1819 and then finally relocated to the neighborhood of Oakland, at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1908 and renamed as University of Pittsburgh.

University of Pittsburgh commonly called as Pitt has been a private institution throughout its history until recently in 1966 it became a part of Commonwealth system of higher education. It is a state-related research university and a member of Association of American Universities (AAU).It has four regional campuses at Bradford, Greensburg, Johnstown and Titusville.

132 acre Pittsburgh campus has stood high with its aim of pioneering in fields of research and technology. With full time faculty of around 4,450,Enrollment of 24,980 undergraduates and 10,034 graduate students and Student faculty ratio of 14:1,each student at Pittsburgh has a chance to fit in the broader horizon of discovery and findings. With 17 undergraduates and graduate school and colleges, it is here where ambitions, talents and visions converge to a single ray of betterment.

The leading programs include Bussiness, Communication sciences, Engineering, Nursing, Law, education, health information management, occupational therapy, dental medicine, clinical dietetics and nutrition and medicine. Some of the famous alumni include Bebe moore campbell, Michael Chabon, Gene Kelly, Abul Hussam, Wangari Maathai, Bill Strickland, Philip Hench, Norman Horowitz ,Paul Lautenberg and many more.

The achievements of Pitt students speak for itself which include 4 Rhodes, 6 Marshals, 41 Goldwater, 5 Truman and 7 Udall scholarships. Also included are Churchill and Gates Cambridge scholarship holders.

Words may fell short to highlight the Accomplishments and innovations of the Pitt’s faculty, researchers, students, projects, and university as a whole. Its distinguished faculty, students and alumni have won Nobel Prize in Peace and Medicine, Pulitzers, Academy Award, McArthur Genius Grant, National Medal of Science, Super Bowl and many more.

Some breakthrough works are Development of Polio Vaccine, identification of chemical structure of Vitamin C, first synthesis of Insulin, worlds first double transplant operation, identification of the most distant galaxy known and Invention of sonic Flashlight to provide real-time tomographic image from beneath skin.

In recognition of it continuous effort ,Princeton Review 2014 edition of the best 378 colleges added Pittsburg as one of nation’s best institution. Other rewards include 22 in world among 2000 colleges and universities for quality and quantity of its research publications, ranked amongst top two U.S and 4th worldwide by The Scientists Best Places to Work in America 2013 survey.

Consistently ranked in top 100 research institutions worldwide, ranked 12 among U.S public universities in Quacquarelli Symonds World university ranking 2012 ,38th among U.S institutions by The time higher education World Universities 2012 ranking and ranked as top value among all public colleges and universities in Pennsylvania by Kiplinger’s Personal Finance 2014.

University also has well balanced recreational activities and has imprinted same king of shining records. Pitt students and alumni have won gold, silver and bronze medals in Olympics. There are 19 varsity teams. Under the belt are nine national football championships. It has the honour to produce competitive and dominant squads of baseball, basketball, swimming and diving, volley ball and gymnastics. Panthers as they are called who went on to play NFL include Mike Ditka, Toney Dorsett, Russ Grim and Curtis Martin just to name a few. Official colors are Navy Blue and Vegas Gold and mascot is Panther.

Pittsburgh institution has always been the forerunner in finding solutions to any new challenge which world might be facing and this is what it is recognized for.
