Summary

With a mission of nurturing intellectual and social Advancement University of Alabama was founded in 1831 at Tuscaloosa, Alabama, USA. Being Flagship of the university of Alabama systems it is one of the oldest and largest universities in Alabama. The University of Alabama (also known as “Alabama” or “bama”) has a rich cultural history covering 2 centuries with active role in American civil war and African-American civil rights movement.

There were two extension centres to UA established in Birmingham (1936) and Huntsville (1950) which later on turned into autonomous units with creation of Alabama systems in 1969. Covering around 1970 acres, UA is anchored around 22 acres of quad, sitting on the original campus design which was destroyed in 1865 as a consequence of civil war. There are around 297 buildings in the campus.

In respect to its continuous efforts for bigger cause of education and betterment of society as a whole the University of Alabama is also referred as “The capstone”.The University of Alabama ranks first among public universities nationwide and fourth among all universities. For more than 10 years it has been ranked as top 50 public universities and 32nd among public universities in 2013.The students of Alabama have also won prestigious national awards and various were named as Goldwater scholars, Rhodes scholars, Truman scholars and Hollings scholars. Not only the students but the UA Libraries have also been ranked 56th amongst 115 of U.S and Canadian university Libraries.

As of fall 2012 the enrollment reached record high of 33,602.It offers more than 80 undergraduate degree programs facilitated through its 12 colleges and schools with an average student/faculty ratio of 19:1. University of Alabama offers bachelors, master’s and doctoral degrees in almost more than 200 fields of study in different areas of arts and sciences, communication and business administration, nursing, engineering, communication and informational sciences, education, human environmental sciences and social work.

The various fields include likes of Advertising, Accounting, Aerospace engineering, biology, chemical engineering, civil engineering, classics, computer science, dance, economics, finance, journalism, marketing, microbiology, telecommunication and film and theatre just to name a few. It also offers distance learning opportunities and has designed degree programs through flexible on-line learning system. Professional program include law and rural medicine.

Along with academia there are various interactive programs incorporated to help students in their upbringing inclined with quality research and learning experience. These activities include freshman learning communities, Honor College and international seminars. The highlight of this incredible expressive approach is the showcasing of research projects at UA’s annual “Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity Conference”. There are also special program for students with disabilities.

Numerous extra curriculum activities are being facilitated at the campus. The athletic team of campus is known as crimson tide. Whereas the regular student newspaper printed is known as crimson white. To support the research facility and help in empowering the dimensions of understanding, it has Alabama Museum of Natural History in historic smith hall, which provides equal exploration opportunities for visitors with its ice age, coal age and age of dinosaur exhibits and exquisite display of geology, zoology, ethnology and photography etc. It also has Moundville Archeological Park and museum which is of equal interest and splendor to public too.

Students at UA actively participate at community level work and completed approximately 1,121,341 hours of community service in academic year 2011-2012.As recognition to its civic engagement it has been named to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll by the Corporation for National and Community Service.
