Aberystwyth University is located in Aberystwyth, Wales.  When Aberystwyth was founded in 1872, it was then known as the University College Wales, Aberystwyth.  It changed its name to the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth in 1894, and then again in the mid-1990s to University of Wales, Aberystwyth.  In September of 2007, however, the University of Wales was no longer considered a federal university, and Aberystwyth was once again an independent institution.

Drama, geography, international politics, and Welsh were all subjects that were first taught to a degree level at Aberystwyth.  As such, the university has a stellar international reputation for excellence in the fields of both teaching and research.  The university is divided into 17 different departments that fall into a total of seven institutes.
