University is an incredible time. However, university is also a time of stress. Exams and all-nighters can play a negative impact on the body, mind and spirit. Meditation is a great way to deal with university stress. There are literally hundreds or if not thousands of experiments on the positive effects on meditation. So to quote one would be a waste of time. So, what exactly is meditation?
There is no definite definition for meditation and taking one authors definition of meditation would create an immediate subjective and bias view based on the author's opinion. So, loosely put, meditation is that process of going inwards.
So, where to begin? There are again thousands of books on meditation and resources on the internet so it can be intimidating trying to figure out where to begin. I would suggest getting online and typing a specific key word search on Google such as “meditation for university stress”. I would look an find three or four websites. Something which is digestible, but will leave you with finding what works for you.
I would then go to YouTube and watch a few videos as well. See what others have to say. After that I would try it for 10 minutes a day. If you feel like doing more, do more! However if you feel like ten minutes is enough, I would leave it at that.
Instead of following a particular style, I would first suggest seeing what happens when you go inwards. Do you follow your breath? Do you watch your thoughts? Do you witness your physical self? Try to see what happens and follow that. After that, I would identify what worked for you and what didn't.
Some of the major hindrances you may feel would be an initial frustration of your minds racing thoughts. The mind has been compared to a chattering monkey or an untamed horse. The mind may seem out of control, but it's just that process of becoming aware which is what starts the chain of reaction to a new and beautiful world.
I sincerely recommend starting meditation in any way .The physiological effects are unlike any other activity of the planet and that is only just the beginning. The real fun is feeling the mental and spiritual effects. Unending bliss, consciousness and awareness being the ultimate goal. But that may take a bit of time.
How will meditation effect you in other ways? As you keep meditating you will see some changes. Less reaction to external stressors, more objectivity, random spirits of energy and laughter. More deep sleep and less need for sleep may be just some.
