Being at university or college is often considered the best time of your life. But while your brain- and liver- might be bursting at the seams, your bank account might not be! Here are just 5 of the best money-saving apps for students.
The first money saving app for students is Onavo- the free data calculator which can help stop you going over your data allowance each month. At the end of the day, what’s the point in scouting around for the best phone deals if you simply end up spending over your agreed allowance?
The app records what you use your data on, whether it’s to stream the video of Taylor Swift’s ‘Trouble’ three times a day, or to surf the net, Onavo converts your usage into clear reports that you can easily analyse. More often than not, you’ll realise that some apps are more data-hungry than others, allowing you to cut down on usage, thus minimising your monthly bill.
Onavo doesn’t just stop there, either; the app actually compresses all of your data usage, increasing the amount of data you can use within your agreed monthly allowance.
The full Onavo app is available in Apple’s app store, though an Onavo Count app, which lets you record and track your monthly usage (but not compress it) is available for Androids.
RedLaser is a perfect app for all your retail needs while you’re at university. When you’re out and about, don’t spend more than you have to on food, clothes or electronic goods. Using RedLaser, which is free for both Android and iOS devices, simply scan an item using your smartphone’s QR code scanner, and you will find the best deals across all major online and in-store retailers.
If you find something cheaper, you can even purchase it using the app and have it delivered to your door!
08Wizard is a great app that could save you those precious few pennies whenever making calls to 08 numbers, whether it’s to pay your electricity bill each month or to contact a customer support line.
Simply download the app on your iPhone, iPad or Android device (£0.69 for iPhones and £0.99 for Androids) and type in the expensive 0800 number you want to call. The app will convert the number into a phone number that will simply deduct from your minutes plan instead of adding an extra cost to your monthly phone bill!
Redeemia is perhaps the easiest coupon app that can ensure you get great discounts on days out, meals and shopping trips.
Rather than downloading all of the discount apps like KBG, Groupon and VoucherCodes separately, Redeemia lets you browse through all of the deals to find the best value discount to suit your needs. You can search for deals that apply to establishments near you, and can also tailor notifications to ensure that you only receive the deals that interest you.
What’s more, the app is absolutely free in the Apple app store, so there’s no excuse not to save money using Redeemia!
HomeBudget is an expense tracker which can help you to keep up-to-date with all of your in and outgoings. The app also converts your balance and transactions into simple to read charts and graphs, helping you to analyse your weekly or monthly spending.
What’re more, the app has a Family Sync feature which means your parents can keep an eye on all of your spending habits, ensuring that you never get behind on payments again!
Although HomeBudget with Family Sync is only available for iPhones and iPads, there are various budgeting apps available for Android smartphones which do pretty much the same function.
